Make up Artist Mondays: Ashley Hooker

Makeup Artist Monday’s
So today is the first day for Makeup Artist Monday’s, where I will be highlighting a different makeup artist each week. Today’s pick is the amazing Ashley Hooker. I will refrain from the obvious jokes about her name,  although if you were to talk to her, she would happily tell you a few of her favorites (she has a great sense of humor).

Ashley is a special effects artist who moved to Los Angeles from Florida with dreams of being in the movies (behind the camera, or course). She did not attend makeup school, but she does have a background in fine art, which shows in her use of colors and texture in her beauty and special effects makeups.

Ashley works on set and in the lab of a LA prosthetic shop. She has keyed several feature films and her work ethic is just as incredible as her makeups. I have assisted Ashley on set and noticed that she has a great eye for color,  detail, and continuity.  She has also been known as a blood chef and  she has design her own non-staining blood. A highly sought after commodity, especially in horror films.

Tip for being a better makeup artist
I asked Ashley if she had any one piece of advice to help someone continue to grow as a makeup artist. She suggested doing face painting for kids. However, I am not much of a kid person, so she also suggested some non-makeup projects like painting with water colors, pastels or any medium you choose.  She said it will build your hand-eye coordination, which will make your makeups look that much better and also help speed your application time (so you and the 3rd AD can stay friendly).  All things that sound good to me. Thanks Ashley!
