2012 Oscar nominees for best makeup

So they have announced the nominees for this years Oscars. Of course the news covers who is up for best actor, best picture, best director, blah, blah, blah… but who is talking about best makeup?

So I went to the Oscar website to get the lowdown on who is up for best makeup and here it is, directly from oscar.go.com .

Best Makeup

  • Albert Nobbs
Martial Corneville, Lynn Johnston and Matthew W. MungleAcademy Awards History:
These are the first Academy Award nominations for Martial Corneville and Lynn Johnston.
This is the fourth Academy Award nomination for Matthew W. Mungle.  He was previously nominated for Makeup : GHOSTS OF MISSISSIPPI (1996) SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993)And won best makeup in  BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA (1992)
  • The Iron Lady
Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland

    Academy Awards History:

These are the first Academy Award nominations for Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland.

Now here is my question, why are there 9 choices for best picture? Even sound mixing has 5 nomination. So I guess the question is: How does the Oscar committee decide how many movies will be nominated each year? I may not loose sleep over this, but I will be doing a bit of research to see how things are done.
