12 Days of Christmas Movies, Day 10: Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)

Day 10 of the 12 Days of Christmas Movies that have fun special fx. Todays pic is  Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010), Directed by  Jalmari Helander.  It’s a different take on the Santa Claus story.  A rather bizarre, yet suspenseful, Finland Christmas treat and a new Christmas favorite of mine.

For all those who don’t like to read when they watch stuff, this movie is not for you, since there are subtitles.

Synopsis: Archeologist dig up Santa, but he and his helpers are more than they bargained for. Soon the locals find out that Sant is real.

The special effects are sometimes subtle like dirt and ice on the actor’s face and body, and sometimes it’s a missing ear. All of these things along with great acting and beautiful cinematography, help create an unsettling idea that Santa & his helpers are not to be trusted.

The film has a small cast and thus a small makeup department, but they got the job done. Here is a list, from IMDB, of makeup/special fx artist whose work helped make Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale a creepy Christmas classic.

Makeup Department
Elisabeth Lusie Haugan …. assistant makeup artist (as Elisabeth Haugan)
Salla Mäntymaa …. makeup artist
