31 Days of Halloween Makeup – Day 2: Makeup Kits

31 Days of Halloween – DAY 2: Makeup Kits
You don’t have to be a makeup artist to create interesting looks for Halloween. While you can do Halloween special fx or beauty makeup with products you already own, there are companies who make kits for just about every creature you want to become.

If you are going for something classic like a skull, witch, vampire or  zombie, then it’s a good idea to use a kit that has all the colors you will need. It will make life easier.

There are different kinds of makeup kits: Beauty/Fantasy and Special fx. We will save kits with appliances for another day.

Choosing Halloween Makeup:
The type of makeup you purchase will depend on a few things:

  1. How sensitive your skin is
  2. How much money you want to spend
  3. How many colors you need
You can get really cheap grease paint brands like Rubies and Spirit Halloween, that have makeup kits starting at $3.99 and up. Or go for the professional stage makeup lines like Mehron, Kryolan or Ben Nye whose kits start at around $10 and up.
If you are good with colors, you can get a set of primary colors and mix them.  The less expensive brands give you lots of colors, for a little money.

Test the Makeup:
The differences between the high and low-end brands will be coverage, how well the makeup holds up when you wear it and how likely it is to irritate your skin. Most people won’t have problems with the cheap makeup.
Of course even the professional lines can make you break out, so test it a few days before application by:

  • Dabbing a small amount on the inside of wrist or crook of elbow.
  • Wait 30 mins
  • Rinse off
  • Keep an eye on the area for a day to see if you have a reaction.
Blood for skin versus eyes & mouth:
When shopping for blood you need to consider where it will be used. Not all blood can be used in the eyes or mouth. Be sure and read the labels. Like these blood capsules are for mouth but they suggest that you don’t swallow the blood.
I can’t stress this enough:
Never use blood in the eyes or mouth unless the package says it’s safe!
